Ghosts and Goals – 6 Exciting Halloween Hockey Practice Drills

We’re in the business of making hockey fun and accessible to all ages and all skill levels. Hosting pick up hockey gatherings helps us to grow the game, which is our core mission. Here are some Halloween hockey drills and stations to use for those Halloween-week hockey practices.

By the way, if you’re local, please come out to our Ghosts and Goals Halloween Hockey Skills & Spooky Pick Up event on Tuesday, October 29 from 4:30 to 6 p.m. at The Rink at Community Park at New Hanover Community Park in Gilbertsville!

Ice Hockey & Dek Hockey (Ball Hockey) Halloween Practice Ideas

To make Halloween week practice fun right off the bat, tell kids to come to practice in costume.

Practice in Costume

Be sure to set guidelines for any unsafe articles of clothing or props that you want them to avoid. Common sense should reign here but you never know.

You can even host a costume contest if you like.

Candy Corn Stickhandling

Instead of boring old cones, have the players practice stickhandling through inflatable candy corns! We found candy corn bowling sets at Walmart and those should work pretty well for this drill.

You can also use the same concept with pumpkin buckets or any other Halloween decor on the rink.

Halloween Shootout

Have your goalies dressed up in a funny costume and ready to block the shots. OR – make your own Halloween targets with magnetic goal targets or foam punch-out hockey goal targets.

King of the Candy Bowl

More details on this later – one of the coaches suggested this as an alternate game to one of the regular drills they do at practice. Sounds like this one is played within the faceoff circle.

Ghost Sharks and Minnows

Upgrade the name of the popular game that is always a hit at sports practice. The ghost shark is an actual animal, so you can roll with this one right across the rink.

Hockey Give and Gho(sts)

I admit, I cannot resist a good pun, so here you go. Give and Gho(sts) will teach hockey kids how to give a quick pass and get the ball or puck right back as they go on the breakaway.

Give-and-go’s are a pretty basic skill that isn’t always taught to the young age groups, but it is a valuable one that the kids can start applying right away in game scenarios.

Spooky Pick Up Hockey

Encourage everyone to wear a costume and play hockey rocking their Halloween looks.

After all the hockey fun is done, be sure to have a special snack or some candy for the kids!

Halloween Hockey Group Photo

Set up a space with a fun background or just add a few spooky props somewhere on the rink. Get everyone together for a nice big group shot or take a selfie with the tallest guy’s arm.

Be sure to share out the picture with your participants, and also on your social media. You can even use it to promote next year’s event!
